Skin in the game

What Does Skin In The Game Mean?
A term coined by renowned investor Warren Buffett referring to a situation in which high-ranking insiders use their own money to buy stock in the company they are running.

Investopedia explains Skin In The Game
The idea behind creating this situation is to ensure that corporations are managed by like-minded individuals who share a stake in the company. Executives can talk all they want, but the best vote of confidence is putting one’s own money on the line just like outside investors!

Creating new and lasting relationships. Building something entirely new. Creating something fresh from something that existed. Evolving business to a new place. Changing a culture. True innovation. Standout success. Attaining influence or authority. Building a devoted following. Change of any kind.

There’s one thing that all of these have in common…

You must invest something of personal value and worth.

It might be your ideas, your energy, or your reputation. Maybe it’s something tangible, like money or resources. Perhaps it’s a bit of all of those combined.

But leading – truly leading from within, not just sitting in a position of anointed leadership – requires an element of vulnerability that few are willing to risk. It means betting on your own hand, and being part of the things that you’re asking others to do with or for you.

If you have little invested, you have little to lose. And it’s hard to trust your intentions if you can’t be bothered to commit – and risk losing – something you value in the name of the thing that you want.

Let your team, your volunteers, your customers, peers and colleagues know what you’re willing to put on the line to achieve something. Don’t just work on a project. Don’t just build a plan and execute on it or delegate it. Invest in it. Personally and professionally. Put some skin in the game.

And let them see you do it.

Then watch how the game – and your own perspective – changes dramatically.

Are you truly ready to lead your charge?

4 Steps to Achieve the Success You Desire

The steps to achieve visions or goals are simple. If that is so, then why does it seem that achieving success takes so much longer than anticipated?

The application, consistency and persistency of the following four steps are what it takes to achieve success. The lack of any one or more of these items at any given time, may slow down, stifle or bring to a dead stop – your desired success.

4 steps to achieve success.
1. Ask specifically for what you want and write it down.
2. Eliminate the conditions.
3. Focus on plan A.
4. Just do it!

Step one. Declare specifically your vision or goals and better yet; write them down. Understand the difference between vision and goal setting. Look at your Vision as your road map and your goals as the sign posts along the way. By taking the time to write out and declare verbally your intentions; increased clarity is developed, inspiration and motivation is deepened. Be certain your vision is supported by your values and your personal strengths. For the most well-rounded results, develop goals around your vision in the 5 most important roles in your life; faith, family, friends, financial and personal. This will prevent you from forging ahead in one role in your life while leaving the other roles behind.

Step Two. Eliminate the conditions. There is never enough time in the day. There is never enough money. There is always a holiday or some sensational event coming around the corner. Conditions are a set up for failure, a reason to procrastinate and conditions can often be limiting beliefs or fear based. It seems here in Minnesota, our summers are too short. Work weeks are shortened; weekends are packed with vacations and other fun activities. Holidays, especially during the late fall and winter months are often used as an excuse for why we don’t accomplish what we need to accomplish. Allowing conditions to get in the way of moving forward is the perfect recipe for limiting success. BIG MISTAKE. Forging ahead with a plan in-spite of the “conditions” is a much better approach to staying in front of the curve ball and offering less chance for losing momentum. Expect conditions and plan in advance a strategy to overcome the delays.

Step Three. Do away with Plan B! Focus. Focus. Focus. Do not become an expert in distraction. Having a fall-back Plan B automatically suggests failure to your primary focus or Plan A. You can’t have one foot in the door and one foot out the door. That lacks focus. You can’t take your eye off the ball without getting smacked in the head. You must have focus. Unless you have a proven record of success, you must remain focused on a primary Plan A. Don’t get this confused with a second stream of income. Focus may not be compromised as long as the second stream of income compliments or supports your Plan A. Plan in advance for those days where a lack of motivation or inspiration is not readily available. Know where to turn, what to do or who to talk too in an effort to regain your focus on Plan A.

Step Four. This step seems the most simple, yet is often the most difficult. Step four – Just do it! Roll up your sleeves and get it done. Take action every day. Accomplish at least 3 action items per day. Small steps, large steps, large and small steps. Just implement. Don’t let what you don’t know, prevent you from just doing. There is truth in the saying, doing something is better than doing nothing. When you are overwhelmed, remind yourself that you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. Just do it. One action at a time. Be grateful for what you have. Be grateful for the mistakes you make. The more grateful you are, the more you will be allowed. Think with a creative spirit as opposed to a competitive spirit. No one can do the job the way you can. There is only one YOU to do YOUR job! Just do it!

Those days where success seems impossible these 4 simple steps when practiced consistently and persistently, will turn your thinking to I’m possible!

Conditions

1. A restricting, limiting, or modifying circumstance: It can happen only under certain conditions.

2. A circumstance indispensable to some result; prerequisite; that on which something else is
contingent: conditions of acceptance.

Conditions may mean death to your
business. If you are waiting for the perfect time, the money to come in,
worrying how the holidays will make an impact, whether the sun shines or not,
you are setting limiting conditions that can have a dramatic impact to your
success.

Conditions are a set up for failure
Conditions are a reason to procrastinate
Conditions are masked behind procrastination
Conditions are fear based

 Masterminds and Mentors helps you
see through those limiting conditions allowing you to move your business
forward regardless of the date, the time, the weather or any other condition
you put in front of your success.

5 Daily Marketing Tips for Leaders

1. Visualize your goal and what you desire

This marketing tip will actually set the tone for all the other steps. When you wake up and before you go to sleep, put yourself in the space of ALREADY achieving your goals. Meditate, feel, taste, and smell the outcome. If you do it right this part will become so real to you that it will naturally move you to the next step.

2. Income producing activities

This particular marketing tip is considered a compromising area for most. Some think that checking email, organizing  files, desk or office, planning the day, training others, and talking on the phone about any and everything; is considered being productive. Not true at all. The only TWO things that make you money are: 1. taking massive action on marketing and 2. speaking to qualified prospects on the phone. Period point blank end of story.

3. Personal development, self-mastery

Work on yourself more than you work on your business. This means every single day reading or listening or watching something that will better you as a leader. There is always enough time in the day. Turn off the tv, put down the newspapers and garbage novels. At lunch if you have an iPod or iPhone put on your headsets and listen to Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, or whoever you choose. Allow their words and beliefs to transform you into a better leader.

4. Mastermind with other leaders

Put yourself in the position of being surrounded by other high-caliber professionals.  There is much to be said by being around other like-minded professionals that may be step ahead of you as a leader. Learn through the collaborative efforts from the professionals who have the skills and business success plans that are similar to those you aspire to possess.

5. Position myself at the top

Always play from the top! If you don’t have the money to get at the top then work your butt off finding ways to get it or to climb your way through the ranks. Leaders understand that those who typically get to the top take business seriously. They play to win! And winning means more business, satisfaction and let’s face it – money!

GO GETT’EM!

A Journey of Discovery

I had heard of Mastermind groups but had never had any personal experience with one.  I was having coffee with a friend from a
networking group and he said to me, “I have to introduce you to Coach Gibbs,
the two of you think a lot alike.”   He
was participating in a Mastermind group, with Coach Gibbs as the facilitator,
and he started telling me about the positive experiences he had had since
participating in the group.  Intrigued, I
encouraged him to ask Coach Gibbs to give me a call.

I have been around the block enough times to have a healthy skepticism about some of the
“self improvement” programs out there.
Since I had not personally experienced a Mastermind and Mentors program,
I kept an open mind when Coach Gibbs called me but I was not an immediate
convert to the Mastermind concept.
After some discussion with Coach Gibbs about her Masterminds and Mentors program, I was
interested enough to participate in a small seminar called Momentum.  Momentum is a 3 to 4 hour seminar that gives
you a glimpse into the Masterminds and Mentors process and how effective it can
be for achieving your vision.  After the
seminar, I was convinced that a Masterminds and Mentors program would be very
beneficial to me in my exploration of where I was trying to go with my
business.
On my journey of discovery, through a Masterminds and Mentors program, I realized
that the real value of a good mastermind group is not the helpful tools and
incredible ideas you receive when working with other like minded people, but
the satisfaction of reaching your end goal in a successful manner.   My end
goal was to clarify the vision of my business and implement a process for
success.  My personal experience in the
Masterminds and Mentors program helped me achieve my goal, with a surprising
outcome.
As I said, I started the 6 month M & M program to help me achieve clarity around my
business vision and to develop a program to be successful in attaining that
vision.  I was starting a new business in
an industry that I was very knowledgeable and skilled in but was feeling a very
low level of satisfaction with.  I am
pleased to say that at the end of the 6 month program, I had achieved my
goal.  I now have a very clear vision of
my business and a definite path to reach success in my chosen field.
I receive great satisfaction in my business now and I have a roadmap for success, because
of the strong support, great tools, honest feedback and creative ideas from my
M & M team.  And, as I said, the
results of participating in the M & M program produced some surprising and
unexpected results regarding my business.

I am now a Masterminds and Mentors Coach and Facilitator.

I found that my dissatisfaction came from the fact that I was in the wrong business,
for me.  I was already doing the business
coaching and I had clients that were already coming to me for business
consulting.  I was trying to make a
business model fit into something it wasn’t made to do.  Through M & M I am able to use the skills
I have been using all along. Since becoming a facilitator, I have learned new
tools to help businesses succeed as well.
My goal, as a Masterminds and Mentors facilitator is to create a
successful learning and discovery environment for every M & M participant.  My passion is to help each person who
participates in my M & M programs to be as excited and as satisfied with
their results as I am.
Now, I am not saying that everyone that goes through a M & M program will achieve the
same caliber of results that I did.  To
reach your goal takes hard work in a M & M program.  It also takes dedication, constant
reassessment to ensure that the goal is kept in sight and being accountable to
complete the work that is needed to achieve the desired outcome.

I challenge you to be all that you can be by participating in a Masterminds and Mentors
program.  Whether you are new in
business, have been in business for awhile or are searching to find your own
business niche, join me in my next Masterminds and Mentors program on your own
journey of discovery.  I look forward to
seeing you as we explore the possibilities together.

Doing the ImpossibleMasterminds and Mentors
  makes the “impossible” achievable!

Remember the 4 steps to “Doing the Impossible?”

1. Don’t settle for great, when YOU can do the impossible.
Sure we all want to do great things, but what about those of us/you who
want to do better than great? or the impossible?

2. Get rid of the conditions.
We limit ourselves when we say things like: we don’t have the time,
we don’t have the money or I am too old. You know the conditions,
we all have them; limiting beliefs.  Get rid of them.

3. Eliminate Plan B.
Having a safety net prevents us from moving forward. It gives us reason
to stay at great and prevents us from reaching the impossible. Eliminate Plan B.

4. Just Do It!
Roll up your sleeves and get to it. Don’t delay. Go after the impossible!

What one M&M participant has to say about her results…

“I joined Masterminds and Mentors at the very beginning of 2011. The
meetings were well facilitated and focused on accomplishing things
that would make a big difference for me in my business/life. My
income increased by 50% the first month. I maintained that level the
second month and am ahead of schedule to achieve it for the third
month in a row. This was an increase I had been trying to make happen
for about six months prior to joining Masterminds and Mentors with no
luck. I am excited to see what happens over the next few months!
This program is perfect for anyone ready to be serious about their
business and make things happen.

Party Planning and Strategic Planning

How often during the course of the last couple of years have you gone above and beyond in planning a well attended event that has something for everyone?  It may be a graduation party, a significant birthday party, a wedding, family reunion or just about any reason to pull a group of people together.  All the details are thought of in advance and no stone is unturned. Whalaaaa. Food and frolics for everyone in attendance! Even the clean-up of the event is fun because you can relive every moment of laughter. WHEW!

Why is it that I find myself running in to people who find it difficult to apply the same party planning tactics to setting up a business? Or starting a family? Or changing careers? I wonder if at least one of the reasons the strategic planning step is missed; is because of the term “strategic planning”. Does strategic planning seem too big?; too technical? too scary or time-consuming to perform? It is easier to just dig in without much fore-thought and planning; only to hope things turn out the way we want them.  Or tell ourselves things will turn out the way we want them because we will work really hard.

Believe me when I say, I have been there myself.  I have told myself…If I work really, really hard I too, will make lots of money and things will work out just fine. SURPRISE! It didn’t work that way. Yes, I worked hard, very hard. But the money didn’t necessarily follow all that hard work. Then one day it struck me that strategic planning can start out as simply as planning a fun event or a party. Answering the questions..Who? What? Where? When? Why?

Applying the same creative and simple party planning methodology can be a springboard for a creative, well thought out strategic plan. As you mosey through answering the questions; it allows for the creation of a vision and the development of a process.  Clarity is reached. Planning and action becomes easier. Goals can be set.  Results achieved.

The beauty of developing a strategic business plan is that it too can be fun. It is fun to be successful. It is fun to have clarity and to grow with the plan and change as the plan changes. It is just as much fun as cleaning up after that party you worked so diligently on.  The fun and frolics of a strategic plan can be re-lived as you grow and become more and more successful!

Plan your party.

Strategically plan your life!

How Masterminds and Mentors Began

Let’s face it. Men are different from women. And owning, managing and operating a business is no different.

Having spent many hours dedicated to attending various business networking groups and meeting with other like-minded women; I realized there is a missing link.  I have spent countless hours talking with others about their business, countless hours talking about my business and at the end of the day… retreat to the office loaded with new contacts and ideas only to find myself overwhelmed and/or have no idea how to go about implementing all the thoughts and ideas.

Lots of words, little or no action – missing link!

Frustrated with yet another networking group, I returned home one night and with a friend began expressing my thoughts out loud. (It is amazing the ideas that can be borne by expressing thoughts out loud)  My spoken words revealed to me that the missing piece to so many of the efforts I put out there can be found through collaboration, idea generating and problem solving.  I pulled all of the skills and techniques that I learned out from my past life and brought them face to face with me right then and there. The thoughts kept pouring out of me.

As a trained facilitator, I could take other like minded women through the same processes I learned years ago. I will start with women. (Consider a man’s group later.) Limit the group size in an effort to form a trusting and respectful relationship; and long enough for the group to maximize on opportunities. The potential for others just like me to make a direct and significant impact to their bottom line is out there just waiting to happen! I can facilitate a group of great minds through a process of discovery and application; and then these same great minds mentor each other holding ourselves and others accountable for our word. Our mentality will be similar to a board of directors. WHAT A CONCEPT!  Inspired by my friend with her spoken words (once I let her have time to say something that is!) why don’t you do it?

And that is how the business was borne.

The fact that Masterminds and Mentors domain was available was confirmation to move forward. The other confirmation was how quickly and how beautifully another dear friend of mine created the exciting logo for Masterminds and mentors. I love it!

The first group gelled quickly; to a person experiencing some phenomenal results. Each meeting we leave feeling high with excitement and can’t wait to get together the next time. Some fear also sets in following the meeting, typically surrounding how many terrific opportunities there are to work. Fear of the unknown is a natural reaction for us to feel and quite frankly; a welcome motivator.  More on this group of fabulous women down the line.

Until then, men….get ready. We will have something for you too!

Testimonials

“It was the tough love tactics that allowed me to see that I am getting in the way of my own success. The only way I was going to be successful is by setting the appropriate customer focused metrics, acting on activities I have been procrastinating on, and measuring success. The tough lessons learned by attending masterminds and mentors puts me back in charge of my own success! I highly encourage any person who is struggling or not, to consider joining one of these groups. It more than pays for itself!”
